As your baby enters the second month of life, they continue to grow and develop at a rapid pace. While the first month was mostly spent sleeping and eating, your little one is now beginning to explore the world around them through their developing senses. Here’s what to expect during your baby’s second month of life.
Sight
Your baby’s vision is still developing and will continue to do so over the next several months. By two months old, they can focus on objects that are about 8 to 12 inches away, which is about the distance between their face and yours when you’re holding them. They can also track objects that move slowly across their field of vision, such as a toy or your face.
To help your baby develop their vision, provide them with plenty of visual stimulation. Hang black and white or high-contrast toys near their crib or play mat, and make silly faces and exaggerated expressions for them to watch. Be sure to give your baby plenty of face-to-face time, as they are naturally drawn to human faces and can learn a lot by studying your expressions.
Hearing
By two months old, your baby’s hearing is well-developed, and they can differentiate between different sounds and tones. They may start to turn their head or respond to a particular sound, such as your voice or a familiar toy.
To help your baby develop their hearing, talk to them frequently and use a sing-song tone of voice. Play music and sing songs, and use different tones and inflections to keep things interesting. Be sure to respond to your baby’s vocalizations, as this can encourage them to continue communicating with you.
