As your baby reaches the six-month mark, it’s time to start thinking about introducing solid foods to their diet. Starting solids is a big step in your baby’s development, and it can be an exciting and sometimes overwhelming experience for new parents. But with the right approach, you can make the transition to solid foods a smooth and enjoyable one for both you and your baby.

When to Start

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends starting solid foods at around six months of age, when babies can sit up on their own and show signs of readiness, such as showing interest in food and being able to hold their heads up steady. Starting solids too early can be harmful to your baby’s digestive system, and waiting too long can cause your baby to miss out on important nutrients.

What to Start With

When it comes to first foods, there are a few options to choose from. Traditionally, rice cereal has been a popular first food due to its mild taste and texture, but some experts now suggest that there may be better options. You can try pureed fruits and vegetables such as apples, pears, carrots, and sweet potatoes. An avocado is also a great option as it is a healthy source of fat. Try offering one new food at a time, waiting a few days in between to make sure your baby doesn’t have an adverse reaction.
