This is my final column on kids’ screen time. At least for a while.
Why? By now, screen dangers are well established. Numerous studies have shown that kids shouldn’t watch hours of brainless garbage on their iPads. A new study found that 1-year-olds who watched a lot of TV had a harder time paying attention by the time they were 9. (My five screen commandments come later in this column.)
In the midst of the “screens are bad” deluge, one study stands out. It shows a simple but profound reality: Affluent kids have better outcomes when it comes to screen time.
Researchers from Harvard’s Graduate School of Education found no relationship between the amount of time 4- and 5-year-old children spend on mobile devices and their language development—when also taking into account household income, parent education and reading in the home.
